Ensure your enrollments are processed efficiently: Include your clients' Medicare ID number

What is the Medicare ID number?

The Medicare number is a CMS-assigned number that can be found on your client's Medicare card. To ensure your enrollment applications are processed efficiently, without delays, you must include this number exactly as it appears on to the enrollment application.

Why is the Medicare ID number important?

  • If the Medicare number is incomplete or missing, we must contact the enrollees to verify what their number is. And enrollees may be hesitant to provide this by phone.
  • If we’re not able to verify this information by phone, we’ll send a letter to your client asking them to provide their Medicare number by a designated date.
  • If we don’t receive the Medicare number by the designated date, the application will be denied.

What do the Medicare ID numbers look like?

CMS assigns every person with Medicare a randomly-generated Medicare ID number. The Medicare ID numbers are:

  • 11 characters long
  • Made of only numbers and uppercase letters (no special characters)
Also, Medicare ID numbers don’t have the letters S, L, O, I, B, and Z to avoid confusion between some letters and numbers (i.e., between “0” and “O”). To learn more about the CMS-assigned Medicare ID numbers and the format specifications click here.

How to help your client if they can't find their card

If your clients can't find their Medicare card:
  1. Ask them to check around the house for any old or unopened mail. Your clients' Medicare card was mailed in a plain white envelope from the Department of Health and Human Services.
  2. They can sign in to MyMedicare.gov to get their number or print their official card.
  3. They can call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048. There may be something that needs to be corrected with CMS, like your clients' mailing address.
