New process for new and pending smoker status changes

Due to the suspension of paramedical and lab collections during COVID -19, we’re putting in place a process to use Oral Fluid Testing (OFT) in lieu of urine testing for in-force smoker status changes. This is available starting June 1, 2020 for all new and pending requests.

What is an OFT?

Using saliva collection, OFT lets Clients confirm they have not used nicotine in the past year. An instruction sheet on OFT has been created to walk you and Clients through the sample collection process.

How does it work?

1.     You complete Declaration of smoking status (for changes on existing policies only) #E18 and submit it to Sun Life.

2.     We identify the need and order the OFT, which will be sent directly to Clients. You’ll receive a notification indicating the OFT has been ordered through the Sun Life Secure Activity Center.

3.     You can then reach out to the Client to advise that an OFT is required and explain the sample collection process. Please note it may take up to seven business days for the Client to receive their  OFT supplies

4.     Once the Client receives the OFT supplies, they should contact you and arrange for a secure video session. During the session you should:

a.     monitor the Client as they complete the OFT

b.     assist the Client in completing the lab slip  to include the policy number (Lab Slip Section A)

c.      make note of the barcode for your files (found on sticker in Lab Slip Section D)

5.     Once the test is complete, the Client must sign Lab Slip Section C and Section D of the consent form. This must happen during the video session.

6.     The Client can then mail the test back to Sun Life using the enclosed instructions and postage paid envelope.

7.     Once Sun Life receives the test results, they’ll be reviewed through our regular process.

Please email NBInfo@sunlife.com if you have any questions or concerns regarding this process.
