New updates on resuming the collection of medical tests

Last week we communicated that we plan to resume the collection of medical tests, while keeping in the forefront Sun Life’s top priority being the health and well-being of our Clients, advisors and paramedical examiners.

Our approach for each case will be:

1.     Process the case using our temporary underwriting guidelines noted below

2.     ExamOne’s “mobile appointments”

3.     Labs collections at the Client’s personal doctor’s offices or private/executive clinics

4.     Obtain labs through Dynacare fixed facility

Sun Life will reach out directly to Dynacare and ExamOne to arrange the appointment or deliver the kit to the appropriate location. Only where needed will we prioritize considering the age of the file.

We encourage you to regularly monitor Dynacare’s website for opening of new fixed location sites in your area and ExamOne’s website for up-to-date service information.

Temporary underwriting guidelines for insurance paramedical requirements

Sun Life will continue applying our temporary underwriting guidelines in an effort to help you settle more business and help give Clients the coverage that they need. As a reminder, these temporary measures include eliminating* the need to submit blood and vitals for all life insurance products within the specified age and amounts bands listed below. A Sun Life tele-interview must be completed in order for the temporary guideline to apply.

·       Age 18-40, up to $2 million

·       Age 41-50, up to $1 million

·       Age 51-60, up to $500,000

*We may still require more evidence in the above age and amount bands if the Client has a medical history.

For cases that fall outside of the temporary underwriting guidelines, we’ll continue to look for ways to make decisions to issue coverage for the amount requested by obtaining Attending Physician Statements and other forms of evidence. We’ll work with providers to arrange the appointments or deliver the kit to the appropriate locations.

Face amount reduction option

Finally, in extraordinary cases, such as an expiring temporary insurance certificate, we may consider a reduction of face amount. For these situations, regular non-medical limits will apply and not the temporary limits. This will allow your Client the option to increase the face amount once paramedical services fully resume.
